i took a semi night scene a few weeks ago and when it was printed it looked really grainy, i used Kodak 800 speed, i know the camera was in focus, but i was just wondering how i could get them a little clearer. its posted on the sight as "Sailboat sunsent" in the outdoor section
Thanks
While films are not as "grainy" as they were even 10 years ago, an 800 ISO film is still going to show quite a bit of grain. I would suggest that for a shot in similar lighting conditions use a slower film, tripod, and a cable or remote release. The slower film will require a longer exposure, so the use of the tripod and cable release will reduce blur. Hope this helps.

Great advice.
This is the sort of shot which requires a tripod - or at least placing the camera on something sturdy if you have no tripod with you.
If you have no cable release or remote release, you can just use the self-timer, if your camera has one. The short delay before the shutter snaps will give time for the motion from your finger to calm down.
When using such a setup, 800 speed film is totally unnecessary - even slow film will get the shot - & with a lot less grain.
I have lots of times taken such shots when a tripod was unavailable or inappropriate (say, European Cathedral interiors) by leveling the camera on whatever surface I could find using coins and such, and the self-timer. Works great.
