Knowing nothing about photography courses, I learned photography by actually doing it. Carry a camera everywhere and take pictures every day. Pick up a program like Adobe Elements which will enable you to do all kinds of basic editing and resizing. Your basic editing techniques for using a DSLR are no different from using a point and shoot. Read the camera manual and become familiar with the controls. Always shoot capturing the highest quality/size image the camera is capable of. Don't get rid of your point and shoot too fast because you'll find that it's more convenient to carry in some situations.

Thank you for the input, I have Photoshop CS4 for editing my pictures. The local college has a beginner photography class that starts next month. Not sure I want to devote the time to attending classes. I would rather do the home study approach.

Now I'm confused. You ask about taking a course in digital photography and now you are taking about Photoshop. They are two different topics with some overlap. Digital photography requires practice. For Photoshop, get a book or two and learn basic editing tasks that involve your own images. What kind of editing did you do shooting with your point and shoot camera?

I did some basic color adjustments on my photos. Not using all the ability's of the program.
