Interesting observations regarding manipulation. I have a few questions that might be worth discussing here.
When does the effect become more important than the subject?
How does one tell?

First of all "more important" would be relative to the individuals personal perspective. The subject is most important to photographers who value the medium as a means to document reality, while the "artist" may see that as unimportant relative to representing a creative expression.
