i've been experimenting with band photography for a couple of years for a few bands that i'm friends with. i've gotten really good and now other bands are starting to solicit me for work (promo and live). does anyone have any idea what to charge for this kind of work? i don't want to scalp anyone, but i don't want to just give it away either.
Get in touch with the American Society of Media Photographers at http://www.asmp.org
What you're asking comes from experience, and from speaking to other people who specialize in what you want to do. The problem with discussing pricing on forums is that it can be construed as collusion or price fixing and could open the forum owners to a law suit. You say that you've been doing it for a few years. Have you been charging for time and expenses?
Just make sure to always have a contract that limits usage and do not give away your copyright, because your work should have value and those bands might someday become famous.

my husband is in the main band that i've been working with and i photographed them as a courtesy. we've all been really good friends for a decade and i considered it practice work at first so i never charged them for anything except maybe film development when i used to use film. all the photos i allow them to use on their website have my watermark on them. i have model releases from everyone and it's known that my copyrights are not for sale, i retain ownership of everything. however this is essentially a verbal agreement. i have an idea of what expenses should be included if i'm paid, such as transportation, any entrance fees for shows and photo editing it's just the amount that i'm unsure of. i'm writing to other photographers in the area to see what their rates are, but it's slow going. i read about the fotoquote software in may's issue. it would probably be a good investment for me. i don't want to get anyone in trouble by talking price here, so if someone could just point my in the right direction net-wise, i'd appreciate it
I don't think there are enough professionals on this forum that have the experience to give you answers. Speaking for myself, I haven't photographed concerts since 1974 and never did it on assignment, only spec as a freelancer. Do a search on Google for "band photography" and "band photography forum" and I think you'll find something. From everything I've read on the forums, bands that are unsigned have no money. And once they get a record deal, the record company pays for the photography.
