I'm new to the FM2 (it's great!). I'm currently using a Nikon Series E standard lens, which I'm told isn't the best in class! Any suggestions as to what I should be looking out for as a standard lens?

If you're sold on the 50mm, try the 50 f1.8, but seeing that you already own a 50mm lens, I'd suggest getting a different focal length or zoom lens. Consider which suits your vision more, telephoto or wide angle. For me, it's always been getting in closer with a wide angle.

According to some reviews and my own experience the 50mm Series E lens is a good lens, just not as solidly built.

You can get any Nikon AI-S or AI lens which are better quality and optics.
