Personally I purchased the Epson Perfection V500 primarily for medium format film scanning and incidental print and document scanning. 120 size film is as big as the V500 will scan so if your film you want to scan is larger, you'll have to go to the Perfection V700 or V750 Pro I'm afraid. But I can say for just $200 the V500 is truly amazing, best medium format scan quality I've ever gotten in both color and B&W - however I must add that I also got Lasersoft Silverfast Ai 6.6 Studio to do my film scanning. The Epson software is just too crude and inefficient.

BTW for most of my scanning, 35mm, I also purchased a Plustek OpticFilm 7500i that I am also very pleased with.

Excellent, thanks for quick reply! I already have the Plustek (based on your recommendation, thank you very much) for 35mm, so I'm primarily interested in scanning older prints for archival purposes. Sounds like the V500 will be adequate for my needs, which is great because the price is nice. I think there may be a couple old negs that are larger than 120, but if so it will probably be more economical to pay someone else to scan them than to buy the V700.

By the way, why the Silverfast Studio instead of the basic Ai? It's not clear from the Silverfast web site what the real advantages of the Studio package are.

The reason for me is that because I write about all this stuff I have to use it and understand how all the features work, and so I work with the version of SilverFast that has the full complement of features like IT-8 scanner and now printer profiling, as well as profiling for Kodachrome scanning, all very valuable capabilities I find offer many advantages to some users if not all.

For many who are just doing a little simple scanning and don't demand the highest level of image adjustment and reproduction, the much less costly SE version of SilverFast is sufficient. The nice thing is there is a choice and a price that fits almost every requirement.
