They are not affected by the screening devices. Knowing that, it really makes no difference how you manage them when traveling as long as you don't misplace them. I flew twice this week with a carry on suitcase and laptop case. I had two consumer digital cameras, laptop, external backup hard drive and all the peripheral stuff for a seminar I was doing. I kept the memory cards in a dedicated wallet in a pocket of the laptop case. One airline made me take the laptop out of the case and send it through separately. Both made me take my shoes off and empty my pockets into the same plastic bin as the shoes to go through the scanner. That's where I would have also put my memory cards had I been traveling with them in my pocket. When I do seminars, I always wear a Sandisk Mini Cruzer around my neck with an entire back up of my presentation so even if my laptop disappears (it's never happened as I sleep with it) I can borrow a laptop and keep on going.

If you are concerned with Flash Media and x-Rays ... forget about it.
The x-Rays' wavelength is close to an optically visible wavelength, but don't affect electromagnetic devices at all.
However, I would be careful with metal detectors. They react on magnetic devices.
If there is need I will make a test with the metal detectors at our court house on monday.

Don't let anything magnetic go through the metal detector. The x-ray machine is the way to go.
