I have gotten quite familiar with my new d40 with natural lighting. But now i am going to try portraits. I have done some research only to create confusion about flash units. I really am not ready to spend 400.00 on a flash. I would greatly appreciate any advice on where to begin, i am willing to spend around 200.00 for now. Any less would be a great advantage.
thanks,

I would try either the SB-400 or SB-600 if you can'tr afford the SB-800

SB600 should fit your budget. SB600 tilts up to 90 degrees and swivels 180 degrees but the SB400 only tilts up and does not swivel. You will need your flash to swivel when you are doing vertical shots.

Besides just mounting the flash (I suggest the SB-600 or SB-800) on your camera, I suggest purchasing the SC-28 or SC-29 TTL cord for off camera flash. There's nothing creative about using a flash on camera and this will give you more options in how and where the light is positioned. You can even set it up to bounce into a white umbrella using the bogen swivel umbrella adapter and a light stand.
