Filters vs. software

Hello.

I read one of Shutterbug's articles on Mr. Robert Farber. It included a few of his pictures. I love his use of filters to give his pictures feeling.

In our wonderful world of technology, it seems like so many of the effects achieved by the use of filters can be done using something like Photoshop.

In the opinion of folks who were taking pictures before all of the software was available today, would you recommend investing in and learning how to use filters like the blue, red, warming, sepia, etc. or just take advantage of what our technology has to offer?

Mark,

There is one and only one good reason to use traditional color filters on a digital camera and it is called nostalgia. No other argument holds water.

Frans, I think the other exception would be the neutral-density graduated filter - not a traditional color filter, of course, but still useful with digital cameras.....

Another filter that is useful with a digital camera and its affect cannot be replicated in Photoshop is a circular polarizer.

With the exception of the polorizer and the ND filters, which are impossible or difficult to replicate the effects in an image editing program, there is no need to use a color correcting or contrast filter of any kind when shooting digital images. The effects of all of these can be better controlled in the image editing program.
