Hello.

I recently received a Canon EOS 35 mm camera from my dad he bought for a photography class. The manual he gave me covers the Rebel G and EOS 500 N, but I'm not sure which I have. I guess that's my first problem.

The second thing is that I bought a roll of 400 speed film to use in taking pictures of my daughter playing softball. I bought a 36 exposure roll. I see that my camera comes with an ISO setting, which according my understanding is set when I load the film. According to the manual, that setting can be changed.

If I change the setting to say 200, can I expect similar results to what I would get if I used true 200 speed film, such as being less grainy and that sort of thing?

Please excuse me if this has already been covered, and is a silly question. I'm definitely an amateur, and I couldn't find an answer searching the forums.

I don't know about these Canon cameras, so I can't help you with identification. Google these models (canon eos 500n and canon rebel g) for images, not websites and you will get many photos of these cameras.

You should let the camera determine the ISO speed (it does this by decoding the outer shell of the film canister). If you change the ISO setting to 200, the ISO 400 film will be overexposed by a factor of 2 and the results will not be good. If you want the advantage of less grainy images, then you should use a lower ISO rated film.

Thank you for your prompt and informative response. I'm not really sure why I got 36 exposures in the first place. I think I'll stick to 12 or 24 with different speeds until I start getting the hang of things.

36 exposure rolls of film are much more useful for shooting action than 12 or 24 exposures per roll. You'll find yourself shooting more frames to capture that once in a life time monent. And you should over shoot because. unlike digital, you won't know if you captured that great image until you get the film back.

That's a good point Mr. Berman. I went through most of a roll the other day in a couple of innings.
