I am curious about the experiences anyone has had with this printer, i am looking into buying an inexpensive photo printer that will give me good digital prints. I've heard that the Stylus 1280 is a good printer but too expensive for me at the moment. I noticed this R220 is similar to the Stylus 1280 with the exception of producing larger prints and lower price. Can anyone drop some knowledge on me about this please?
Hi,
The 220 is not at all similar to the 1280 in that it uses either 7 or 8 individual ink carts and they are much more archival than the inks used in the 1270/1280 printers which I believe are actually discontinued--what are available are just remaining store stocks.
However, it is not as robustly built as the more expensive units, but it does a pretty decent job. One of my daughter's has the 200 which is nearly identical to the 220 and does a nice job. They can be purchased for not much more than the price of the inks alone.
The real photo printer in the letter size series would be the R800 which sells in the $400 + or - range.
thanks,
now i noticed that the epson r220 uses dye based inks, i saw that other models use pigment inks, who here has had a chance to print with both type inks? and which do you think is better?

Pigment based inks hold up better over time as they fade less than dye based inks under conditions of light and contaminants. I'm not sure if this is true for other brands, but the pigments in Epson inks are encapsulated in I believe a polymer and as a results are less dependent on which paper you print on for good results.
