Epson V500 gone?

I was just looking on Amazon for an Epson V500 scanner for a friend and discovered that it's no longer available there. B&H Photo shows it as out of stock. This usually means that the item has been discontinued. Epson still lists it as available on their own web site, however.

Does anyone know whether the V500 is being discontinued? Before I have my friend buy direct from Epson (assuming they really do have it in stock), I'd like to make sure that he won't discover a week later that it's been superceded by a new model at the same price.

Epson has not provided any hints that there is any change coming for the Perfection V500. In fact the scanner line was recently filled in with a new less expensive "V" model. But if this scanner has actually sold out, that is usually an indication a newer version will be coming out. However, it would be my guess that a replacement of the V500 would be just an evolutionary upgrade, as it was a new breakthrough in scanner technology. And it is doubtful any big change should be expected.

But then I have been surprised occassionally. But Epson is a pretty deliberate company and they just realeased a whole new line of printers, so marketing will have its hands full for awhile.

Also with stores it is the beginning of a new year so stocks of goods in inventory are at their lowest after Christmas, and sometimes re-stocking takes time and in an uncertain economy too much inventory is a big risk.
