Easy Photo Tip: Harvest A Cornucopia Of Photo Ops At Your Local Farmer’s Market

Looking for some fresh places to take pictures as the summer winds down? You may be living near one of autumn’s best locations and not even know it.

Farmer’s markets provide an amazing assortment of photogenic subjects. The vegetables and fruit offer a variety of colors and textures, and the shoppers often add a little color of their own. The market near me materializes every Sunday in the parking lot of a computer train station. There you’ll find colorful flowers, ready-to-eat ethnic foods, herbs, artesian breadstuffs, gourmet pickles and homemade jellies and jams—and of course the obligatory fresh produce.

It’s a relaxed and casual environment, so leave your inhibitions at home and get your macro lens right down in there on the subject. The red raspberries shown here in their contrasting green cartons were shot with a Fujifilm X-E1 and 16-50mm XC Fujifilm zoom lens. But plainly any camera will do.

If there are no farmer’s markets in your area, look for a roadside vegetable stand, a pick-your-own apple orchard or similar open-air marketplace. As we slip later into the fall season, many of the vegetables will be replaced with pumpkins, gourds and the like, so the whole process starts all over again with new subjects to photograph.
