I've just compared using an E-330 as a waist level camera with a Nikon F3 with its waist level finder. Setting: hotel meeting rooms, which tend to be dark because large. A not-unusual exposure would be f/2.8 and 1/30th at ISO 1600. I've been trying manual focus cameras like the F3 because they have some low light focusing advantages, but this doesn't apply with waist level, as the finder's like a TLR one but much smaller. Zone focusing only in those settings. Back to being aware of distances all the time. A consequence is the need for really high ISO to be able to stop down a bit for dof. I don't know how the Nikon pix turned out as I just learned (I'm trying to learn about these things) that it's nasty to push process chromagenic film. Unfortunate as I love that stuff for scanning. So this is means that film loses one edge unless you still print with an enlarger. The E-330 waist level finder is also MUCH better, obviously. I am also getting OK at B mode focusing and I don't think I lost more than one shot in 50 to focus issues. Considering the light levels that's excellent for me. (AF would have problems there, and little beams of light in advance are ridiculous in candid shooting.) As you may have noticed Pop Photo found the E-330 to have moderately low noise at 1600 with about 10% reduction in sharpness, which is a tradeoff I'll gladly take. So on balance the E-330 had more of an edge than I expected. (I do love my old Nikons by the way.)
E330 or film for lo light waist level?
