E-510 and Manual Mode

Hi,

I am new to digital photography and my first DSLR is an E-510. When
shooting in manual mode do I just set my aperture and shutter speed
and then use the exposure level indicator as a guide? Then take
exposures and use the histogram to judge - kind of trial and error? Or
is there a preferred, more exact method?

When using manual I decide which is more important, the depth of field or stopping the action, to get whichever is most important. After making that decision I meter and then set the parameter, shutter or aperture, that has not as yet been determined. Once the exposure is made you can check the histo to see where the highlights and shadows fell and readjust the exposure or metering point as neccessary.
