Downloading On The Run; Portable Digital Storage Units And CD Burners For The On-The-Go Photographer Page 2

Raw File Compatibility And More
The ability to transfer and read JPEG, TIFF, raw (NEF), or a combination of all can vary with these units. File size and format might be a concern with some units. With the Coolwalker I had no problem downloading any file from my Nikon D1X, D2X, or D200. The Transcend unit will only recognize JPEGs, and the Epson P-2000/P-4000 is also fully JPEG compliant but is selective on its ability to download only "supported raw file formats from the following SLR cameras" which include the Epson R-D1, plus most Nikon (D100, D1X, D2H, D70) and Canon (D30, D60, and EOS-1D Mark II) digital SLRs. On the other hand, the CD units will download anything that is on the card. It is important that you check compatibility with the non-CD burner units.

(Above): With a wide access drawer, replacing or retrieving a full-size CD on the EzPnP EZDigiMagic is now an easy task even in the tight quarters of your SUV. (Below): This GIGA Vu PRO is a new unit that allows you to capture all of your images in the field and right in the palm of your hand. With a capacity of 120GB it has the storage capacity of over 40,000 photos, depending on your file size.

Additional Features
With the Coolwalker, GIGA Vu PRO, and Epson storage units, once your card is downloaded files can be manipulated or browsed at will. On the Coolwalker and Epson units you have the added convenience of being able to give each a file name or rename them via an on-screen keyboard. Additionally, you can place photos in a Thumbnail mode for an easy overview, zoom in for the details, and, like a full-fledged computer, move, copy, rotate, and even search for a particular file or folder while watching it all on the screen.

Some portable CD/DVD players like the BurnAway, Disc Steno CP300, EZDigiMagic, or Slim FC CD burners allow you to monitor the progress of the burn cycle on small LCD screens. If you chose not to travel with a laptop all of the CD burners include a remote control and the necessary cables to access photos using a television monitor, great for late night hotel shows and picture reviews.

(Above): As a portable field device, the Wolverine FlashPac 7000 is available in 40, 60, 80, or 100GB models. It will take all cards and you can organize your files without the aid of a computer. (Below): The SmartDisk FlashTrax XT allows you the advantage to free up more space on your memory cards with a hard drive capacity of up to 80GB. With a 3.6" screen you can also use it as a external hard drive on the road.
