Digital Rebel XT

Hello,
I will be buying a Digital Rebel XT in the near future. I have been looking at many places, including those who advertise at the back of the magazine. I have found that Abe's of Maine has the cheapest price. Abe's of Maine also offers some Kits other than just getting the camera with the 18-55 mm lens. One kit includes the following:
Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT Digital SLR Camera (Body Only) (Silver)
Canon 75-300 III EF Lens
Crystal Optics 58mm 3 Piece Multi-Coated Professional Filter Kit
Sandisk 1 GB Compact Flash Card
Sakar Universal Digital Camera Screen Protector
Sakar 5 Piece Lens Cleaning Kit

This kit is priced at $852.40 after rebate and the camera with 18-55 mm lens is $752.99 after rebate. It almost may seem like a no brainer to pick the kit with all the extras for only about $100. I'm wondering though if it is better to start with the 18-55 mm lens and then go from there over time. I have used SLR cameras in the past, but it's been about 3 years. Before looking at camera prices, I knew that I would like to get lens similar to the 75-300.

I'm just wondering what other people thought on this and if anyone has any advice.

Unless you are very into just sports, birds and wildlife photography, consider the 75-300 zoom will with the lens factor really be effectively a 110-450MM lens. So if your picture taking interests and needs are more general, for the small price the 18-55mm covers the range of focal lengths most pictures are taken at. Other than the 1GB CF card the rest of the bundle is a dubious real value.

I would suggest looking for a fair and good price on the body and Canon 18-55mm kit lens, and then buy the CF card at Costco.

go to www.ritzcamera.com a little more expensive but the ESP warranty cant be beat. you can drop the camera in water and they will fix it or replace it at no charge.

Two Points Here!

One look to adorama and B&h and shop around at a local camera shop for a good deal on camera, I have priced ritz a lot and have found them to be a least $100.00 HIGHER ON SOME STUFF,

as for those cf cards I got three from staples 2@512mb and 1@1gig w/rebates for a total of $107.00 then found kinston memory made them also and I got two/512mb@50x for $84.00
