digital photography as fine art

Hello all,

Last night I was at borders bookstore checking out the latest photography magazines and books. One thing that struck me was the following: In reading the photography magazines that were geared to the collector or fine art photographer, there was a general distain for digital as fine art. I read several articles in these magazines about how collectors do not like to purchase straight digital images as fine art, but that they prefer traditional methods. My question is this? Do you think digital photography has reached the same level as film photography when it comes to fine art? If so, who do you think is a great digital fine art photographer?

There just was or is to be a major juried show of digital fine art photography in Los Angeles. I recently got a very slick invitation to submit. Los Angeles is a major center for modern art and art photography, and has been for many years.

But whether LA or NY there is one school who simply does not take any "artist" serious still living, and another that is truly contemporary, and LA does have a huge, very fine contemporary art museum. Just across the street from the Disney Concert Hall one of the most interesting buildings in America.

David,

Do you know where in L.A. that digital photography show is being held? I live about 20 min from L.A. and would love to see the work.

Sorry, I did not keep the invitation and did not note where the show is to be held. But if you are that close I'm sure a little digging should reveal the details. I hop you can imagine how many promotions, announcements and such cross my way, so I must be diligent about trashing everything I don't plan to do act on.

At my Studio?Gallery here in Gatlinburg, I have yet to have a customer refuse to buy one of my works because it is digital. No matter if it is straight photo or digitally enhanced, they still go out the door with happy customers. There is plenty of buyers for the works that are not so anal and ignorant about where the industry has evolved. For those juried shows or whomever will not accept or like digital work... they need to wake up quick
