couples dance photos. help!

I am the photographer at a firemans ball. What kind of minimalist (cheap) set up will work with good results. I have a canon eos rebel t1i with 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 is and a 50mm 1:1.8 II ef lense. I am also considering buying a canon speedlite 580ex II. flash difuser? I dont have a background. could I use sheets? if so what color. white, black? what about additional lighting???

No background, try opening the lens as much as possible. Wal Mart has inexpensive cloth you can use as back grounds. It's in the sewing dept.
Try your flash with and without a diffuser. Maybe you could take a small computer set up, (laptop) and preview the pictures and see what you like best.
