Realize that the tiny lenses and sensors of compact digital cameras have enormous depth of field, and it is truly difficult to actually shoot an out-of-focus image. Here is an example.

This was shot with a Nikon Coolpix 5000 on its wide-angle setting, with an aperture of f-8.0. The nearest flower is just over an inch away from the front element of the lens. As you can see, not only the flower is sharply in focus, but the distant trees are as well, with everything in between. Even at the maximum aperture, about the only way to get the background to soften is to focus on a very close object or to use the extreme telephoto end of your zoom. In these cases, give the camera time to determine the best focus before depressing the shutter all the way to take the picture.

The culprit is almost always camera motion, which can resemble a lack of focus to the unpracticed eye. Small digital cameras provide little surface making it difficult to get a good grip, and so little mass that ones pulse may be enough to soften the image.

The best solution is to use a tripod. A table-top tripod can also be a very useful tool, small enough carry everywhere, and any surface where it can be placed will work to get sharp images. Where mobility is important, a monopod works like a charm. Watch a sporting event on TV - the sidelines are a forest of monopods.

When there is no way to use such camera supports, leaning against a wall or a pole helps as does resting elbows on a table or resting the camera on any solid object. Buying a camera with image stabilization helps a lot, but it also has its limitations. One still has got to try to hold the camera as steady as possible. When there is no way to steady the camera, shoot a burst of exposures and cull those that are not sharp. Hopefully, one out of the series will be. Always squeeze the shutter button, not punch it.

The best way to deal with lack of sharpness is not through software, but to eliminate it at the time of exposure.
