Hi eveyrone - I'm shopping for a couple of new (and better) compact flash cards - i now have two 1gb saneisks, which are ok, but would like to get some larger and faster ones, i.e., around 4gb for my minolta maxxum 7D. two questions:
#1 - is there a limitation on the size of gb's that my camea will handle? seems i read something about certain cameeras can't handle more than a certain size gb card
#2 - any recommendations on a brand for good speed that any of you have?
thanks in advance!
Arthur, i do not believe that it is the mb size of the card, but rather the WRITE speed that some cameras cannot make use of. Check the manu.'s web site as this technology/firmware can be upgraded by download(now there's a seemingly contradictory statement)
IMHO, you may be better off with multiple cards rather than one big one; the all the eggs in one basket bit.
Look at the sweet spot for CF cards. I bought a few 2 gig cards for $79 a few months ago because they were less than half the price of a 4 gig card. You also have to think about your shooting style and how fast you'll fill up a card before you are able to download the images to your computer.
Lexar and Sandisk seem to have the market covered and they keep going back and forth on speed. Also, they are the recommended cards by the major camera manufacturers but that doesn't mean much since any cf card will fit.
Putting all your eggs in one basket, like ronk said, does have it's merits. But it really depends on your shooting style.
I still use my 8 and 16 meg cards from my first few digital cameras. I use them to take files to Costco and Sams Club for printing.
