I would like to buy a compact digital for an upcoming trip, any suggestions? I would like to be able to print up to 8 x 10's, what would you recommended for mp's? Much thanks!
We've reached a point where most any five to eight megapixel camera can make an 8x10, if used properly. You can't go wrong with Nikon or Canon. I would recommend not getting one of those cameras that are the size of a pack of cigarettes or smaller. Image quality suffers because of physical limitations of the size format.
What you do have to understand is that in order to get good enough quality images to make 8x10s, you have to follow some basic rules. Use all the pixels the camera is capable of capturing at the highest resolution with the least amount of compression. Use a tripod or some other form of support if possible. Don't use the digital end of the zoom.
If you're not able to travel with a laptop, purchase a few 2 gigabyte memory cards. That really depends on how long your trip is and how many pictures you think you'll take each day. Memory is cheap. I just purchased a few 2 gig Sandisk Ultra II cards from B&H for $85 each. Don't let shortage of memory dictate the image quality you capture when traveling.
That should give you something to think about.
