Concur with you Don. Some comments accompanying the rating would be greatly appreciated by the participants and it will help the photographer improve their shots further.

I was just looking at the last 7 day's entries, and the only one who even rated any of the pictures was me. Wouldn't it be nice to hear what our peers think of our work?

Nobody knows the gallery is there, and won't until there is a forum specifically to discuss gallery images.

I have to agree with Don. IF someone wants to rate a photo I think they should at least comment on the image. I had one image that was good but the background was distracting. One person rated it a 5 because of the background but he made a comment to that. Now I know it was true so I have no problem with a honest comment. Now if I was not aware of it the comment would have pointed that out. Peoples comments can be a learning tool. The gallery is fun for me because I get to see what interest other people. I always try to bring positive comments or say little if it could hurt someone. Monte Johnson.

Maybe they do know it is there, but just aren't interested.

Many years ago there was a consortium of camera companies called IPOSA that did about seven shows a year around the country. As a staffer at Petersen's then I participated in many of the shows, sometimes doing mini-workshops, sometimes with a gallery of my images, or running a staged model shoot using a local modeling agency. The print exhibits with a dozen different, photographers showing some pretty decent and varied work always obtained the least amount of audience interest, and the audience was entirely photographers, and maybe a wife or girlfriend and even kids dragged along.

For a couple of years at Petersen's as a staff editor I had the assignment to choose the monthly photographer gallery and write up the photographer and make the selection of images published. I'd see dozens of photographers' portfolios, a lot of recent graduates of the three major photo schools near Los Angeles, and new professionals in town looking to get established. Of all the gallery portfolios that were published the only one that got any feedback mail from readers was a special of photographs done underground by Soviet amateur photographers and secretly smuggled out of the USSR (this was before the Berlin Wall came down).

With that job I also got numerous invitations for gallery and museum openings of new photo exhibits. I attended most, but soon came to dread them, not so much because the photography was not interesting, but listening to the stupid things people said about the photographs was embarrassing, it made me feel I did not even want to be known to be a photographer.

Although I put photographs in my articles for illustrative purposes, I have not shown any of my photographs for at least 25 years.

I participate in a number of forums. My observation is that every forum has a unique user group, some forums are more discussion oriented, some more photo oriented. This one seems more discussion oriented.

I know I for one need to take more time in the gallery raring and commenting on photos. Monte Johnson.

Actually, Larry, the galleries have become quite popular since they were introduced on December 7. Since then, our stats indicate almost 185,000 page views. I do agree that some thoughtful comments along with the ratings would make the experience more meaningful.

Is that 185,000 page views or hits?

The fundamental problem with the galleries is that a week after posting pictures, they are buried so far down that no one will see them without specifically looking for you.

I'd rather see inline posting of a single image with comments in follow up posts. Then everyone participating in the forum will read the critiques and possibly contribute.

Good question, Larry. Yes, it's certified page views--audited by Nielsen Net Ratings. Sounds like you understand that page views are a much more conservative and honest metric than "hits" which can mean different things to different people. We don't measure or report our web traffic on the basis of hits.

The Gallery was put up for a chance for everyone to post images and I must say that I am overall very impressed with the level of the work. Some people use it as a way to publish their work for others to see, and comments are most welcome. There are a lot of views of the images, so they are being seen. Hopefully some will inspire comments and queries. We like the service and the opportunity it affords for everyone to show their work to hundreds of thousands of potential viewers.

I enjoy the gallery. I only wish it would let me post. I have tried it says error line 113. I cannot fix it on my end. It has to be fixed from the web people. Monte Johnson.

I am new to all this. I have read forums before but this is the first time I have actually participated. I posted in another forum that I was new and that I had photos under my name (Grant) in MY GALLERIES, and asked for people to look and comment, since I really am somewhat unsure where my photography is compared to others. So far, while my photos are being looked at, no one has made a comment and no one has responded to my first post, which I think is in "Catch All" (or is this Catch All?) It has only been a day or two, so I am probably impatient.

I wish more people would make comments, btw, when I enter my pics into a subcategory it's no longer in my gallery. Is there a way to keep them in the main gallery?

Fantastic goods from you, man. Ive study your stuff ahead of and you're just as well amazing. I enjoy what you've got right here, adore what you're stating and the way you say it.
