I'm trying to take 2 photos and make them into 1. I have a photo of my son that I erased the background from and want to put him in another photo of like a snowy country scene. can anyone explain the procedure to me or point me in the right direction to find the answer.

It's not easy, unless the subject is totally isolated, making the selection easy. You need to practice using the various methods of creating selections.
Katrin Eismann has a good book on the subject titled "Photoshop Masking and Compositing".
