Canon Powershot A640 Settings

Now I know this isnt a SLR which I probably should use, but. I really do like this camera. I take photos of a lot of bands in my city and normal setting is dark with stage lights.

When I take the photos using auto or even the custom settings, flash and non flash, the exposure ranging from -2 to +2, maybe black & white, and ISO of either 400 or 800. Sometimes the pictures come out with a lot of noise and some don't. Is there a way to limit the noise without using the flash? I know more light in the lens will do this, but I want the "cool factor" effect with stage lights on the subject.

Based on what I have told you do you, what would be the best settings to use for these types of photos?

How accurate are the highlights when you shoot at such a high ISO? Are they overly bright or blown out? If so, you can change to a lower ISO and use a more accurate meter like spot metering. Or just guestimate the exposure based on your experience. Shooting digital is like shooting slide film. You should expose for the highlights and then you can bring out shadow detail afterwards in Photoshop.
