I just got a Canon 70-200 F2.8L IS lens for my Canon 30D camera which I shall use mostly for shooting action sports and I would like to ask a few questions in regards to it's IS feature. You see,I heard that IS doesn't really freeze fast action shots.Anyway,I was just wondering on what results shall I get if I was shooting fast action sports with a high shutter speed and the IS feature of my lens turned on?How will it compare to shooting action sports with a high shutter speed and the IS feature of my lens turned off?Shall it be better for me to turn on the IS feature while shooting fast action sports or turn the IS feature off?Lastly,in what shooting scenarios is it better to use the IS feature and it what shooting scenarios is it better not to use the IS feature of my lens?
THANKS.
My understanding of IS is that it will allow you to hand hold a lens at appox. 2 stops slower than one be normlly possible w/o introducing camera shake. In the case of a 200 mm lens, normal would be 1/250 sec, so you could hand hold it at 1/60 sec w/o blur being aused by YOU.
Fast action requires a short shutter speed to freeze the action. Depending upon the subject matter's speed and direction of movement you might need a shutter speed of 1/125 to 1/500 sec to stop SUBJECT induced motion anyway, so I think that the IS is a moot point.
My understanding is that IS only abates camera induced motion and does nothing with subject induced motion.
The IS feature is only for camera movement not the subject. It comes in handy when shooting night sports
It's a fantastic lense. It's also a fast lense that won't need any stabilization assistance in the sports field unless you're using stadium lighting or something similar. Even in that case you'd be fine. If you were doing journalistic photography, this would be a great lense to have in the bag. It's a perk that's worth it's expense in the end and offers a wide range for 200mm. Put a 1.4X or 2.0X adapter on that for some great close-up results.
Enjoy the lense.
