canon 30D and sigma 300-800mm help

I was taking pictures today using the stated equipment(the Lens is brand new and I was using it for the first time) in the middle of the day (bright sunny 80 degree day) of a bridge way off. The images taken at 300-500mm turned out great. But the images I took at 600-800 came out very bright. I had the hood on the lens on.

Does anyone have any idea why they came out so bright?

I'm assuming you're an experienced photographer purchasing a $5,000 12.5 pound lens but you're asking people who have probably never handled the lens to speculate on what your problem may be.

What were the settings and what was the in camera metering set for. Chances are that the metering was over exposing because there were darker areas of the scene in the part of the viewfinder that the metering was biased to.
