Canon 20D shooting RAW in Basic Modes?

I recently purchased a Canon 20D (my first DLSR). I've noticed that if I select any of the "basic zone" shooting modes, such as profile or scenery, the RAW format is disabled.

Is this normal? I assume leaving out menu options would be a difficult thing to be a malfunction on a single camera.

And if this is normal, for what reason to they disable RAW format for the various basic zone shooting profiles?

There may be a technical reason why Raw is disabled in the auto everything modes, but more than likely an assumption is made by the designers that the camera, even though high-end and advanced, will still be used by unsophisticated snapshooters, so their logic is if someone chooses the easy point and shoot way to photograph they will want the internal image adjustments as well that is afforded by JPEG save mode.
