Hello =)
I am thinking about buying the 20D, does anyone have this camera? any thoughts on it?
I noticed there are a few ebayers selling a new canoon 20d, and 2-3 lenses, hard case, and tripod for under 2k. I read somewhere that these are not good bargains. Someone told me to be warry, often times these cameras do not have a U.S warranty? This would be a big investment for me, and I'd hate to throw away that much money, so any opinions are welcomed.
Michele,
I have been shooting a lot in the last few weeks with a Canon 20-D SLR and using Canon's 10-22mm D wide angle lens, among other lenses I use regularly. The camera has produced excellent results with easy, good handling and control. And it is lighter and more compact than many digital SLR cameras, especially those that are specifically targeted for pros, which I find an advantage.
There are models and brands of digital SLR's that have higher specs and higher prices of course, but even at typical street prices from Canon authorized dealers I believe the Canon 20-D is an exceptional value in the performance it provides.
Those who have cautioned you about "deals" on e-Bay should be heeded. There are gray market cameras out there with no US warranty, and e-Bay provides no protection to the buyer. So, on something like an expensive camera that you are going to use seriously/professionally it could be a disastrous gamble. I'd shop all of the authorized Canon dealers diligently for the best price, and if necessary make compromises on accessory lenses, like the new "digital' lenses offered by Sigma and other well known independent brands to stay within your budget.
David-
Thank you so much for the response! I appreciate your thoughts. I am saving for the camera, I knew I wanted it, but wanted to hear some first hand reviews.
I went to the camera store today to check it out, I just LOVE it. I am a total amateur right now, but it's something I truly love, and hope to someday do it as a profession.
thanks again you are very helpful
Hi Michele,
I too agree with David. There are times to skimp and then again times to just pay a little extra for the tool that will serve you well and be backed up in the event of trouble.
I too am planning on purchasing the 20d this summer, but I now hear about the 30d which is touted to be 10.2 mp...so who knows.
I have been a canon user for years, and have never really been dissatisfied. I use some after market lenses, but have had a small focusing issue with the 10d and a sigma 28-105 2.8.
I have corrected the problem with a canon lense. Sigma will "re-chip" lenses for the new digital requirements but I think buying the newer lenses are the way to go.
Take care.
Anthony
Michelle, you're gonna love the 20d. I've only had mine for a short time but there is so much difference between it and the digital rebel. Good luck and let us know when you get it. Be interested in hearing your thoughts after you use it for a while.
I have nothing to add on the 20d I too am looking to get one probally by the beginning of Sept. But as for ebay i am a dispatcher with a sheriff department in califorina and i have taken many calls reguarding ebay fraud and that is alot of money to be gambling with. I know you can find good buys there but be very careful. Good luck

Brandon,
Before you commit to Ebay, check around for used gear. KEH is a reputable on-line dealer with reasonable prices. If you do go with Ebay, check the stats on the seller first - how long they've been there, number of complaints vs. satisfied customers, etc. You can get some good deals there but you can get burned, too (which I learned the hard way).
I wouold have to agree with Bill here. I have bought a couple cameras off of KEH and have been very pleased. Their rating system is very good. IF you buy something that is in EX condition you cannot tell it is not new. They have pretty good reviews. I have saved money buying used. Even new their prices are sometimes cheaper then other stores. Monte Johnson.
I bought a cannon 20D right before Christmas from Express Cameras.com. I looked on the net for the best prices and there prices could not be beat. I called and told them what I wanted and what I would be useing it for and he told me about another package that was not on the web. The package that I bought came with a tripod and photo printer for the holidays. I had a tripod and wanted a monopod in stead. No problem. The camara came in it had a tripod and no printer . I called and he said it was on back order. I got the printer today along with the monopod. I was worried about spending that kind of money on the net but this kind of company makes it worth while.
Hi
I currently own a 20D. Great camera! I am also looking at the nikon D200. Before I went digital I used F3's & 4's and retained all of my nikkor lenses which are useable on the D200. You won't go wrong with the 20D. I recently bought a nikon D50 from cameta camera because the price was too low to pass on. They were very polite and seemed very reputable. Good luck!

If you're looking for a new one with a USA warranty, then i'd check out either b & h photo or adorama. they are both very reputable and will give you a good deal.
