Nikon has Capture 4.2, a editing program that also allows you to remotely control certain dSLR's, among them the D50 and D70. It has a timelapse feature where you can specifiy the interval between shots and the total number of shots. I have a 30 day free trial copy and the program works very well, although I haven't tried the time lapse feature. The Nikon website probably specifies what cameras work with this program. It sells for about $90 and it looks like I am going to buy it even before my 30 day trial expires.

Interesting. My friend has the Rebel 20D and we were testing it out last night. But the computer can't seem to capture anything faster than 1 frame every 5 seconds. The camera however can shoot almost 3 frames per second on its own when recording to the card.

We tried hooking it up to the computer and just held the button down on the camera. Initially it had the burst of roughly 3 frames per second but then it slowed as the files started transferring to the computer. We had the camera set to the RAW setting.

What is the fastest speed you can get with the Nikon cameras? I'm hoping to get about a frame a second.

I would also love to try and shoot timelapse stars. Does your software allow the shutter to open longer than 30 seconds? That is the limit with the Canon software. My friend doesn't have a fast lens so the 30s limit would not work for us. But even if we shot with a faster lens I would like to be able to leave the shutter open longer for timelapse work.

With the Nikon Capture software it is about the same; it takes several seconds for the image to be transfered to the computer; that process is not particularly fast. The longest shutter time for this program is also 30 seconds.

Well, it looks as though the software can shoot 1 shot per second. So that rocks. With a fast lens and using an ASA of 800 I should be able to get some decent timelapse stars at night shots.
