What you are referring to is what is called tethered operation. Using a USB cable between camera and computer the software provides camera control remotely and each exposure is immediately and directly downloaded to the host computer. Nikon does have software that supports tethered operation. I would suggest there is not much likely available in third party software for this purpose. So check out Nikon's web site.

It's called Nikon Capture. But it doesn't let you see the image prior to capture. When tethered, the camera saves the images onto the computer, not the compact flash card. You then see the captured image on the monitor. At PMA last year, we used Nikpon Capture to control a remote camera (to shoot an overview photo of the exhibition hall. Great accessory to conventional digital photography. It certainly has its uses for on site monitoring or documenting an area where the photographer does not need to be necessarily on site or obvious. Does the quality of its images make it an improvement over conventional monitoring cameras? If so, it certainly should find a niche in monitoring areas.

Thanks everyone for their input, I tried the Nikon Capture software first, and it crashed my PS7, so after freaking out 3 hours before the shoot I learned of a different way to do it. Since the computer was down my next option was to tether the camera to a TV, this worked beautifully. The TV displayed the image immediately, and in good enough quaility to help the clients decide to purchase or not. Then when the prints came back for the lab, the got their shocks knotted off by the difference in quaility. The TV sold alot more pictures then I planned for, many people just standing around decided to take their picture just because the saw everyone elses pictures.

PS. I got my laptop back up and running with a RESTORE point, which I knew PS7 and Capture didn't mix.
