Buying a used d100

Hello all, I have been taking photographs for about 4 years now, mostly landscapes when I go hiking. I have been using an Olympus 750 and I am now looking to upgrade to an SLR. A co-worker of mine has been practicing photography for some years now and has quite a bit of experience under his belt. He has offered to sell me his Nikon D100 and a 24-120mm lens to go along with it.

First of all, I am curious what I should expect to pay for a camera that is about 3 years old. I know he has taken good care of it and would not sell me anything that is broken.

2nd, would this be a good camera to start off with as compared to maybe a D50? I am pretty savy with learning electronics and I figure I could shoot in RAW format and then edit my mistakes if I dont have a complete grasp on the exposure.

3rd, any other comments or recommendations you all have for me would be greatly appriciated.

Jesse, being a Canofreak myself, I can't advise you on the relative merits of the D100. But regarding the price, you should check with KEH at www.keh.com and see what they're getting for a D100 in comparable condition. That will give you an idea of what you should pay for the one that's been offere to you....

Jesse,

The D50 or D70S are better cameras than the D100. So it all depends on how much money we are talking about. I personally would go for the newer cameras. Shooting RAW has tremendous advantages and exposure correction is one of them. However, you can check the histogram for exposure right after you take the shot and retake it with an exposure correction right away. If you get a dSLR you need to familiarize yourself with "exposing to the right", meaning that you get the highlights all the way to the right of the histogram without blowing out the highlights. This assures you of the best exposure and lowest noise. The website www.luminous-landscape.com has an excellent article on this and many other issues.
