I am new to Digital Photography. My dad had hundreds of pictures on his computer. It got a virus and died (his photos are all gone!) This is my biggest fear. What is the best tool (or site) on the computer for backing up photos online so they are in cyberspace and can't be lost? I saw the gallery page here and tried out one photo. It looks like it is more a gallery to show off only your best photos, not storing several hundred photos. I don't think anyone is interested in photos of my nieces and nephews Christmas and etc. A free site would be great but I know that may not be possible.
The only really secure backup of photo files that is not as costly as an external RAID multiple hard drive system, is to record the files on Gold/Gold CD's and store the CD's securely. Web photo sites can be discontinued, and have been on relatively short notice. There is no assurance a company will will not go bankrupt or arbitrarily discontinue supporting a storage service via the web.
Another solution is an external hard drive. I use the Western Digital Passport. It's a small 160 Gig hard drive for under $100 at Costco. Each year I make a complete backup of my most important files, which are the three or four bodies of work that generate an income for me. Then I store the drive in my bank's safety deposit box.
Thank you both! I hadn't though about going out of business.
That is a good idea to have an external drive in the Safety deposit box. Then even if your house burns down, you still have your photos!
