Technically and in respect of international standards, ISO, the aperture, shutter speed are universal in that they correspond to each other. And to some extent the sensitivity (film speed) is similar to the approximation given to digital cameras. However you are misled in the idea because "it quacks, waddles and looks like a duck, it must be a duck". Just because a dSLR looks like a 35mm SLR and the settings can be equated and both make photographs, any similarity and correspondence ends there.

There is absolutely no similarity, correspondence or universality between film and a digital image sensor. Once film is exposed the physical changes due to the light recording a latent image in a silver halide emulsion is fixed, immutable, unchangeable and locked into the physicality of the film forever. With a digital image sensor all that occurs is that information is recorded by the sensor and that information is and can be changed endlessly, it is as computer lingo describes extensible.

The fact is that a scene recorded by a digital image sensor is changed by the camera's built-in processors after exposure, more or less depending on whether you are recording JPEG's or Raw, and if Raw the playback on the camera's LCD is interpolated by internal processors, so what you are seeing may or may not be consistent with the readout of the aperture, shutter speed and ISO setting to any known degree at all, and there is no way you can know of that at the time. With JPEGs the image processor has corrected the image after exposure and then the display is also an interpolation of the file image, so what you see is not necessarily what the camera readout specs say you exposed at all, it could be close or it may not be a more distant approximation.

However, the readout from a digital camera may be a more accurate exposure setting result than that provided by a 35mm film camera SLR, simply because the light metering technology has been improved over the years that separate the two cameras.

Thank you for the reply and information. I'm not so concerned about changing the information that winds up in the film camera, but simply trying to get the film camera to "approximate" what I've shot (in RAW) from my digital camera.

The basics regarding this shot.

If I took a 35mm film camera, loaded with ISO 200 film, set the aperture and shutter speed the same, would I get something that looks similar or would it be completely a different picture?

Maybe I should simply take the plunge and find out...and simply look at the results in a comparison to get my answer...

...but would like to save some $$ if possible.

Stating what David said in other words, it's the classic apples v. oranges comparison. You would not get the same color, exposure and contrast results from film as from a DSLR. More than that, no two films have the same characteristics, ISO notwithstanding. That's why scanner software like Silverfast has different negative profiles for each film make. I'd also be willing to guess that two DSLRs with different sensor arrays would also produce somewhat different results in the same shot.

So, if your goal is to find a film that will match the example you posted (nicely done, by the way), your last observation is probably the answer: Plunge in and find out! Some films will give closer results than others, but I'd be willing to bet you'll need some post-processing work to get a close match.

I was on the opposite end, moving from 35mm film to digital, and had the same questions.
I'd say that - within a broad range - shooting with the same settings on both cameras will give you similar, but not exactly the same, images. Film ISO isn't as precise as digital ISO, in my somewhat limited experience. Film also tends to pick up more shadowy detail than digital does. Film shooters are always advised that "When in doubt, bracket" your exposures since you can't immediately see how your exposure settings will look like on the final print.

So... Don't worry about 'wasting' your film. Your digital exposure won't be so far off that you can't get a good print from your negs, IMHO, and you'll only improve your skills the more you try. Film is always an experiment
