another rookie question

good morning,

been lurking and reading and I want to get into SLR 35mm photography. I thought I had it narrowed to my first 'real' camera to be one that was manual, a 24mm or so, 50mm and a 135mm lens, grab the Kodak book or something similar, but now I'm a bit confused and was asking for some advice.

I was kind of leaning towards an x-570/x700 body and go from there. but after reading post after post about broken ones, I'm holding off.

So, other than (from what I've read) the Pentax MX or maybe the K1000, any other Manual SLRs you'd recommend for a rookie, that can get together a good reliable system and start out? I'm finishing my master degree the next fall, which opens up time and money for travel, and I'm especially awed by landscapes, nature, wild animals, THAT sort of photography. candid shots of people as well, my wife scrapbooks family pics so this seems to go hand in hand

I already do digital, but this seems like a challenge to create, and I'd love some hard hitting advice.

any help greatly appreciated

Ken,

One I can highly recommend is the Olympus OM-1. It's about in the same clsss as the Pentax K-100, all manual but has TTL metering. The Zuiko lenses are excellent. The attached shot is one I've posted before but it's a good example of the Oly's capabilities.....

Ken,

When auto-focus became the new thing to have in 35mm SLR cameras, Canon decided to adopt a system that involved a complete new and larger lens mount, the EOS line. This made the old breach lock Canon bodies and lenses obsolete. The old FD mount Canon bodies, especially the pro F1 is strong and reliable, as well as offering a large selection of lenses of all kinds and focal lengths. Because the FD Canons were very popular there are a lot of used ones available, and at good prices considering the very good build quality of the camera and lenses.

I appreciate the answers, folks, appreciate it very much. My wife has a Minolta 3000i and a QTSI, and I am going to start looking for a manual SLR like the ones you suggested for me to start 'learning'. I'm also searching Ebay for some manuals i've had suggested to me and I'll start burning film!

If you want a good manual SLR check out the Minolta X370. KEH has some and they are cheap. I used one with a 50 1.7 lens. good camera. Monte Johnson.

Man ,,,As a retired Pro Freelance for 35 years ,,,Find an old Nikon F-2,,,or if you have a few more bucks ,,,don't hesitate to buy a used F4s if they check out Ok ,,The equipment that is available for F-2 and f-4 is everywhere today and some of it is still new and never been sold. These are the best cameras Nikon ever made ,,,Ever,,and they are cheap right now and every repair shop everywhere can fix them. There are more lenses for Nikon out there than any other cameras so you have your choice of some world class lenses that the digital camera croud won't use . Just about every picture in every magazine and newspaper was shot with Nikon F cameras.!!,,,,,,good luck,,,,,,,,,Roy
