Mr. Brooks can probably answer this, I plan to buy a new 30D soon, one thing I need to consider is if the older 380EX Speed light will work with the new electronics? One more question, I want a wider lens than the 28-105 I have on my film camera, do I need an 10mm-22mm or 17-85 lens for the digital, I think the 17-85 is what I want, it may depend on if I want to use it on the film camera also?
Any suggestions? Thanks.
Any EX-series speedlight will work on the 30D, so the 380EX should be no problem.
The Canon 10-22 and 17-85 are both EF-S lenses. They will not fit on your Canon film SLR (only EF lenses fit on a film SLR). Which of the two you need depends on how wide you want to go. Remember that the 30D has an 1.6x crop factor, so a 28mm lens will have a field of view equivalent to 28 x 1.6 = 45mm on a film SLR.
If you want a wide angle zoom lens that fits the 30D as well as a Canon EOS film SLR, have a look at the EF 17-40 f/4 L, for example.
Be real carefull here. There is one thing to consider when mounting old equipment to new. Does it take itto account the lens conversion ratio of film ton Digital. I have sold Canon products for a while now and Know that only the newer 430 ex and 580 ex read this 1.6 conversion properly. Not saying you can't use the 380 but it won't throw light far enough in most instances. A simple adjustmant to manual zoom should correct this issue but after a while it may get tpo be a hassel.
