If you do the math the total number of colors differences between 10-bit and 12-bit obviously is on the edge of human perceptual ability to distinguish clear differences, and will have a practical effect only for someone doing critical color involving the very subtle colors you would find in some photographs of flowers, fine portrait images, and fashion fabrics where exact reproduction values are essential. I currently have two LCD's one of which is 12-bit the other is a less costly model, and you can see a difference, but it is a subtle distinction. For most photographers who want good color reproduction a 21 Inch LCD like the Samsung SyncMaster 214T precisely calibrated and profiled will do everything needed and better than the best CRT's that were available in the past and for much less than $1000. A refurbished model is a gamble in terms of not knowing why it is available and required being refurbished.

You may want to consider the NEC LCD1990SXi-BK-SV, a 19" 1280x1024 pixel LCD with SpectraView II colorimeter which sells for under $1000. It's a little smaller than the 21" but that also has an advantage of menu text being a little easier to read because of the larger pixel pitch. LaCie buys certain LCD's from NEC and resells them under their own name at a higher price so you wouldn't gain anything with LaCie.

I was under the impression, perhaps wrongly, that a monitor with a writeable LUT (such as the LaCie 321, Eizo CE & CG, or NEC 2180UX/2190UXi) would, when calibrated with supplied software or ColorEyes, substantially outperform monitors where the LUT can not be altered (such as the 214T). Am I wrong?

Theoretically you're assumption is correct. In practice it's a somewhat different story depending in part on the software supplied or acquired to accomplish the calibration and profiling, and how the profile once created actually affects the functioning of the display. The only one that in reality demonstrates a significant advantage in both calibration/profiling as well as the control of the display environment on a regular in-use basis are the Eizo ColorEdge CE models.
